Dr. Vic Wulsin (Dem) recently won her highly competitive primary for Ohio’s 2nd Congressional District. In 2006, Wulsin lost by only one percentage point to anti-choice incumbent Jean Schmidt (Rep), who Wulsin will face again in the general election. Wulsin has an impressive record as a physician with a wide range of work, from combating outbreaks of whooping cough as Cincinnati’s epidemiologist to developing a program to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS in Africa. Wulsin has pledged to decrease spending on the Iraq war, ensure Americans have access to adequate health care and balance the budget. Siobhan “Sam” Bennett (Dem) is waging a spirited campaign for Pennsylvania’s 15th Congressional District. Bennett is facing incumbent Charlie Dent (Rep). Bennett has long been an activist in her community and has created unique organizations to improve her hometown. In 1998, she founded Good Neighbors, a non-profit school improvement organization run by students. She also started the non-profit group Properties of Merit, which grants sponsorships to local residents to revive neighborhoods, buildings and public spaces. Properties of Merit was so successful that Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell provided seed money to help the organization go statewide. As a member of Congress, Bennett wants to reduce U.S. dependency on fossil fuels while developing alternative energy sources which will provide thousands of jobs, along with improving the education system and ensuring reproductive freedoms. She is dedicated to improving the health care system, ending the war in Iraq, increasing access to family planning, and improving our education system. Markey later became the Director of Computer Security Policy and Training, which gave her first-hand experience protecting U.S. assets and Americans from internet terrorism. Markey is also a successful businesswoman and avid volunteer. She raised almost $1 million as the president of the Board of Directors of the Food Bank for Larimer County. Through various leadership positions with different banks she eventually became the founder and CEO of Sarasota Bank. Jennings has been a resident and active member of her community for 23 years, during which she took on many prominent roles including President of the Downtown Association of Sarasota, Director of Community AIDS Network, and Director of Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Sarasota County, and she has received numerous awards for her work. Jennings is dedicated to finding bipartisan solutions to problems facing the country such as the housing crisis, our unstable economy, and inadequate health care. Titus sponsored legislation to protect uninsured children, creating Nevada’s Check Up Program. Also for the past 30 years, Titus has taught American Government at the University of Nevada. She is a champion for education issues – pushing for smaller class sizes and full-day kindergarten. In 2007, she received the Outstanding Leadership Award from NOW of Southern Nevada.
